Purflow, ocean clear mechanical canister

I like that backflush idea

Would be simple and easy, but I don`t think that would work out well, at least it never worked for me.
Problem is, the flushing water will take the path of least resistance and once found, will leave the bulk of the pleats still dirty.

Looking through the postings, I agree with getting your sumps mechanical media more involved with debris removal.
If the media your using isn`t trapping out a bunch of the gunk, that leaves your cartridge system doing all the work.
One of the beauties of a sump is the ease of media changing.
Pretty sure you can find a combination of materials that would take some of the load off of the cartridge.
Heck, anyone who can put what you have together can find a way.
Good luck.

Thanks i will find a way but im just a bit pissed because. Now that the sump is up, running, and cycled. i see all the things i should of done different and there are many. I guess thats just part of life and the process or maybe its just poor planning. lol

When you think about it the purflow/oceanclear type canister with 25 micron cartriges should be used/considered more as a water polishing tools

If i can find a not expensive 90g or better yet 120g i will redo the whole sump.

I run two NuClear canisters in series, a 100 micron cartridge in the first and a 25 micron in the second. I use an Iwaki MD40. I have a very heavy load and can get about two weeks between cleanings. The 25 micron cartridge gets the hose/bleach treatment, but the 100 micron comes clean with just a blast from the hose.

I think a prefilter will definitely help stretch out your maintenance interval but, like Kaiser said, a 25 micron filter is going to plug fairly quickly no matter what you do. The price we pay for clear water...

I think i will do a heavy pre-filter and buy a 100 micron cartridge for now so at least i have 2 cartridges.

Thank you all for the input.

If anyone as anything to add feel free ... the more opinions, the more info, the better

How is the filter floss working for you? OR is it too early to tell yet?

That is good to know about back flushing pleated filter cartridges. It won't keep me from trying it when my Ocean Clear arrives but it will temper my expectations for its effectiveness.

For a prefilter have you looked at a pond pressure filter? I think the media is mostly sponge and I get the impression they are more conducive for back flushing... some models even have levers you pump up and down to squeeze the gunk out of the sponge as you are back washing them (expensive!).

I just received my shipment of various filter socks and filter bags from www.mcmaster.com. I am looking forwards to seeing how they will integrate with my 29 gal sump build.

I would be very interested in hearing what you would change with your setup. It is always nice to hear what other people have learned from their implementations!
