Pushed head first into the deep end.... (My Pirahna-Owner Story)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
P.S. I'd need a slightly better picture to tell you for sure... and they're a low-light fish.

Haha, I don't plan on making him feel ill at ease while my hand is in the tank, you can bet your last dollar on that. I always have my eye on him when I do anything in there. I have seen how fast he is and what he can do to fish flesh! He seems to be pretty friendly and extremely intelligent, and he definitely knows that I am the main caretaker. I can't wait to get him a bigger tank! But money's a little tight so I am looking on Craigslist and as soon as I have 50-100 dollars I'll be working on moving him up. Which brings me to a new question...

Can I "bag" him briefly, or is the "two-net" method the safest way?

When I moved my piranhas, I scooped and moved them quickly. never had a problem, but I've heard of people who did have problems, you could try double netting if that makes you feel more comfortable. just make sure he doesn't bite through your net! Try indirect flashlight light, just avoid shining direct in his eyes... He's such a cute little guy. ^_^

Also, I just got my 55, stand, lights, filter for $75 on CL. Had to drive 40 miles each way to get it, but that didn't take much gas, so still only $80-85 total. I guess there's 2 questions that could solve rhom or piranha: is there any hint of color on the belly? and are there small black spots on his sides? You could also google images the phrases "Black Rhom" and "Red belly piranha" and compare.

Welcome to MFK!.. as stated your at the right place for info about your P, I agree its likely a rhom as well. Don't get discouraged about all the info, fishkeeping isnt as hard as most people make it out to be. and remember people here are "Hardcore" in their passion about fish. After getting the basicas down of the nitrogen cycle, and general husbandry you are liely to get more specialized info about your lil' Guy in the Piranha subform.

the stickies there should help you a great deal.

I would also suggest as your going to get alot of suggestions for water changes is to start nice and easy, do not do 50% wc every few days as you "should" be doing. work up to them by doing 10% ones every few days then slowly increasing the amount you do. fish un-use to regular water changes can die from shock.

And invest in a good test kit, the API FW test kit is a great starter kit, get ours threw amazon for about 30$ and it lasts a year or more. this will help you get a "feel" for water quality, and how to balance your water changes with your guys needs.
