putting a plecko with my cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its a hit n miss type of situation with plecos in a cichlid setup most often the plecos are fine and are never messed with just an occasional nip or chase but all usually plays out well..

Than on the other hand there have been a few instances where a hobbyist has an extremely moody aggressive fish(cichlid) and it never worked out either the pleco was beaten to death or had its eyes plucked out..

But all in all most times it works out and it doesnt hurt to try especially a BN pleco..

my 125 has a medusa and a gold nugget.............in an attractive mbuna tank there is no reason why the plecos can't be attractive as well however i would steer clear of the vampire or the leopard varieties as they need pristine water quality something an mbuna tank usually is not do to overstocking.

for algae removal a few rubbernose or a few pitbull plec's works well

Unless the algae is rampant, there is no reason for you to buy a fish just to get rid of the algae. A little algae is not a problem IMO. It is part of the ecosystem. People need to learn to accept that. It is reality. If you want a catfish in an African tank, get synos, not plecos.
