hi
I have a 100 gallon front bowed tank and I'm tired at looking at little black, blue, red, brown and white gravel. hahahah
I kept seeing sand in pictures and youtube vids. and i'm really interested in taking the time to better my tank and make my fish happy.

How much sand do I need for my 100 gallon tank and what steps do I take? Do I take out my fish or just leave them in and take out the gravel then put the sand?
thanks for you info:)

You need about 100 pounds. Remove the gravel first, then do a waterchange/vacuum to clean up any debris left behind. Clean the sand well first. Then turn off your filters and put the sand in. I would wait about an hour before putting the filters back on to let the dust settle, so to speak.

I use pool filter sand. I take it from the bag and add it directly to the tank. Never had a problem. I have never had alot of trouble with abundant dust like I have with gravel so you dont need to rinse it. If you are worried though, add it to a bucket of water and stir. PFS sinks immediately so if it stays in the water column, just dump out that water and only use what sunk to the bottom. One 50 lb bag will do it for a 100

I agree with what's already been said but here's what I would do. Remove gravel like stated. Add 10-20# of sand to a 5G bucket and rinse until the runoff water is clear, shouldn't take too long if you use PFS, play sand will take forever. With the water level in the tank lowered and the filters off slowly lower the bucket into the tank and slowly pour the sand out without getting it too stirred up. Once again this will be easier with PFS than play sand. Once it's all added then refill the tank and you're set.

DO NOT buy play sand. It took my 2 hours to rinse one bucket and that was not even good enough. It is not worth the time and frustration. If you dont want to buy sand specifically for fish tanks(expensive) buy a coarser sand. Play sand is so fine it never settles
