I have a penguin 660R sponge filter for my 10g. However, it is producing WAY too much current. It seems this is the only sponge filter available for me to buy. So I was thinking, could I get a regular power filter and put a sponge from the sponge filter, onto the suction part? Would it work? Thanks.

I would think a power filter would create more current. Why not get a smaller air pump and still run the sponge?

What you mean by getting a smaller air pump? The way that the filter is built, it flows a strong current sideways, whereas my other filters pour in water downards, and that creates much less current.

dude you got a powerhead, not a sponge filter.

Just use an air driven sponge filter. Much less current. Is this an invert tank? Why the need for minimal current?

Sponge filters powered by air pumps are your friend. Buy some hydrosponges, they're the best available and a weak air pump (or a strong one with a valve and use it on multiple tanks as I do) and you'll be set. Once a week water changes with gravel vaccuum to make up for the lack of mechanical filtration and you're sitting pretty.

I'm going to put guppies, and they have long fins. The current reaches around the whole tank...not good.

So I guess I should go look for a hydrosponge.

If you put a sponge on the filter intake on a power filter, it'll definitely slow down the current. I've tried it before.
