I thought it was from your days out at sea. It's an excellent technique for parts that will be taken apart frequently.
To get a good seal using it wet, obviously the parts have to be tight and stay tight. What is squshed out gets formed into a bead around the parts similar to the bead in the corner of a glass tank.
