also, should I cover the outflow pipe from the sump? think they may swim upstream and into the plumbing that way?

This was about $7 or something in the Home Depot pond department. because of the large surface area it is hard to completely clog them. I would use a long horizontal intake pvc pipe. Cut slits into it at 1/4" intervals. Then cover with these sponges.
