Today i made a PVC overflow. I got the gerneral plans and ideas from this site. I think i have done it right. The pump keeps up to the overflow and my water level was fine(just a test run)

My question is this; the tallest pipe on top of the overflow(see pics) has a horrible loud gurgeling noice comming from it. its a constant gurgle. and air seems to be pushing out of the out put as well. what is the cause of this?

I have not installed the check valve yet, but will this solve my noise when i do? if not, what is it for?

by the picture does it seem put together properly? (this is my first DIY overflow)

It is ok. You need to modify the height of the intake. (With the 45* elbow on it) That will be your water level height, so you don't want it too low. Other than that, you seem ok.

looks good
Install the check valve and then put a ball valve on the output side
You then want to adjust ball valve slightly till gurgling is gone

The problem you are having is that the overflow works to good and the water can't keep up so it sucks air as a result
slowing down the flow just slightly will stop this

I have seen where a lot of people put a cap on the vent pipe and then drill a small hole in it. When they are made like that there isn't any noise at all.

The highest upright pipe is only there to disallow suction to build up at the 'T' piece, which if it wasn't there, would suck all of the water out f the pipes and fill them with air if the tank water level went below the intake.

It doesn't really need to be a wide pipe. You could stuff it with filter floss as a sound absorber or replace it with air tube, or cap it and drill a hole in it. Keep the height so it doesn't overflow.
