forgot to add, so if the ball valve will stop the noise, what does the check valve do?

you use the check valve to start the syphon, suck the air out and the water in.

IMO its best to use 2 check valves.. 1 siliconed into the overflow.. and then another on the end of the tube you suck on... the valves like to fail and resiliconing them in each time they fail is a pain in the bottom

check valves aka one way valves aka google it

in a check valve air can only flow one way. so you can suck air out of threw the check valve, but air cannot get back in. it is also wise to put airline tubing on it and lead that back into the tank in case it leaks, but a good valve usually doesnt.
