k thank you very much! i got the 3/4'' overflow up and running now.

the only other question i can think of is about the syphon. i do not want to have the syphon break and my 55 flood my bedroom. i was thinking about an airlifter. can the airlifter go onto the check air valve via airline tubing? is this 99.9-100% assurance that i will not be flooded? i want to be able to leave it and forget it (until cleaning of course). right now id like to go to the hardware store or fishing but am worried about my setup for now.
just so you know, you WANT the syphon to break to prevent overflowing. its when the syphon DOESN'T break that you have an overflow problem. Thats why on your input hose you need to put a hole big enough to stop the back syphon should your pump ever stop or get clogged. I'm assuming your just using standard 1/2" rubber hose, so it needs a hole slightly under the running water leverl so when the pump shuts off and it back syphons, it doesn't overflow your sump.

also, having a syphon on your overflow isn't exactly a good thing, because chances are its not at the same pace as you pump is putting out, so its either going to pump over or syphon too much and flood your sump.

you really should switch to 1" pvc for the overflow, it only costs what $10 total to rebuild it
