hi guys i was looking around on the internet at fish tanks and saw this one guy that had an underground PVC Pipe tunnel system in his saltwater aquarium for his eels. i was thinking about doing this for my senegals when they get around 5inch and i put them in my 55. just wondering if they would even utilize it and what would be a good diameter for the pipes. i was thinking about also getting a Gymnothorax Polyuranodon, but it seems they are very scarce in the trade. any advice would be great, thanks!

pvc is commonly used for hiding places for polys i wouldn't make it under the substrate though, and i wouldn't have 1 long piece but 2-4 smaller pieces so if they need to make an emergency trip for air they can make it. A good diameter would be 3-4"

as far as the Gymnothorax Polyuranodon (freshawater moray eel if i researched right) it's get's from 1.5-2' so a 55 wouldn't be ideal

ive read around and i was considering the fact that an underground system for the Moray would be great and as far as a 55 for it i think with the tunnel system it would work, because eels are more leisurely than most fish and they dont swim around as much as they hide, so they can make do in under-ideal aquariums, odds are it wont reach its max size in captivity, but i could be wrong!!

as far as the bichirs i dont know if i explained it right, but the tunnel sustems of pipes will have Atleast 2-4 entrances used from elbow-pipes that jot up for easy access to go below the substrate. i was thinking that maybe they would enjoy the privacy.

i would say definantly no then if your using the exact same thing. This is what i meen by most people use pvc pipe http://www.mbisite.org/forums/download.axd?file=0;64257&where=msg it's more open. Because a number of things could happen one of them could try and turn around and get stuck and you wouldn't be able to see them because they are in the tubing, they could take a piece of food from the surface down there and try and eat it there and suddenly need air, or they could just run into each other and panic. The point i want to make is that if something happens you can't see them.

the reason i liked the tunnel idea was becuase i wanted a natural look for the tank, but what youre saying is good. they very well could get stuck and need air, but it seems thats worst case scenario. im more so trying to get the pipe for an eel, i wanted some advice with the compatibility of the tubing with the bichirs. thank you for your input :)

Straight up PVC is safe to put in a tank?

Depending on the length & diameter of the pipe...the water inside the pipe could get "funky". Hard to circulate fresh water in & "dirty" water out of a pipe. Maybe it's not a major concern...but something to consider.

See I see what you want to do,but IMO it be best to keep it above the substrate. Just put small 4-5" or so long PVC scattered in there the polys will be pretty much good as long as they can fit in the tubes. Anyways ya try and do something like in the pic I posted stuff like that usually works well for Botha eels and polys
