The Hayward vavles can also be serviced since they can be taken apart. I have not found anyone that sells the individual parts but a second valve can be scavanged.

I second the motion on no caps please.

Teflon tape is for threaded fittings only. Slip fittings must be glued. Although threaded fittings can also be glued, it usually isn't done. Threaded fittings cost more and they can be taken apart at a later date if they are not glued. I sometimes insist on some parts be threaded due to the likely hood of needing service or if the part will be a nighmare if the system requires work for some unforseen reason. I only buy bulkhead fittings that are threaded on both sides. Also if a job is going to be temporary, I'll use threaded valves and unions so that they can be reused later.
 
wow! thanks for your valuable advices! I am going for a project on DIY PVC canister, these valves will prove helpful.
 
Our pool guy recommended that we don't use teflon tape on threaded fittings. His recommendation was teflon paste. I can attest that the red handle ball valves are very stiff on our pool equipment. I believe to be on borrowed time since it's going on five years.
 
paste is better than tape... i use silicone... ill letcha know if it ever fails on me
 
not silicone paste.. just straight silicone (DAP aquarium).. sorry for any confusion.. i do the same thing for AC drainlines at work

The best silicone brand I have had experience with for plumbing is Boss silicone. The clear is way better than the blue; I have no idea why. The Boss brand should be easy for you to get because it is made on the West Coast. It is really hard to find out here :(
