I heard adding flower pots to the tank makes the colours pop.

Need to keep the shells on. It works the same way in flamingos there usually white but they eat alot of shrimp so it makes them pink.

I always keep the shells on when feeding, more nutrition. Like said before, maybe it's different for every fish, who knows.

If concerned about the color so much, use red substrate and red background.

From what ive seen Pirayas are pretty much the only pygo that will stay colorful when reaching large sizes. Some nats will keep a little color but nothing like when they are juvies. Like everybody else has stated reds will slowly fade to a darker sometimes purple sparkles.
