Pygocentrus nattereri in 34 gallons

Black piranha scientific name is serrasalum rhombeus yes. Some will agree and some will disagree. But all of the piranhas that have to be kept by them selfs grow way slower so you can get away with a smaller tank. A pygo will be 6-8 inches in 1 year. People say you can keep a pygo solo. Sure you can do anything you want. But I look at nature and see that in nature they are always in a shoal. So if you want a single piranha get a single piranhas but take your time and look Into it. And honestly a single piranha sucks. Doesn't matter what kind it is.

Off topic but I saw an awesome Rhom at my LFS today, came straight to the glass and even snapped a few times!

Yep buy em small and they grow slow. Maybe 4ish inches in a year. It will be fine in a 37gal for well over a year. I have my mystery serra in a 40b and its plenty of space.

Are you saying Rhoms grow 4 inches a year? Or they will be 4inchs in a year

If you buy them as nickel size babies (like I and baller did) the first year they will grow approximately 3-4" thereafter your looking @ maybe 2" per year or even less. The older they get the slower they grow. Captive raised Blacks (aka rhoms) will Max out between 6-10" in aquariums, of course you can buy 14-16" wild caught rhoms for 500$+. In the wild they just grow like beasts.

I prefer buying babies, raising them and watching them grow. Same with my shoal of Red bellys, its an awesome feeling. Although buying a big ass fish would be Rad its more expensive. Not my cup o tea.

Yeah I agree with what your saying accept the Max size. They still grow large my friends rhom he bought as a yearly and has had it for 4 years and its well over a foot. I bought mine at 3 inches 14 months ago and he is probably 7-8 inches now. Mind you I have him in a 120gallon tank with very good filtration and a strong current ( 2 aqua clear 70 power heads. ) and a good diet

Yea so 3-4" in 1year 2months. About right but without actually taking him out and measuring it obviously its a approximation. I've seen very few exceed 10" raised in aquariums. If you buy a wild caught at 6" then its likely to hit the 10"+ mark. I was referring to nickel size babies, which for black and white reasons grow slow. I even had mine in a 90gal solo with 2 ac110's 1 1400gph circulator and a great diet as well but he seems to enjoy the planted 40b.

And mine most likely isnt a black, numerous sources have linked it to a denticulatus! http://www.aquascapeonline.com/aqua...nhas-genus-pristobrycon-denticulatus-piranha/

Any pics of your fishy?

All my rhoms I own I swear have barely grown. My manny and sanchezi I think has grown alittle which ive had longer then the rhoms tho. When I buy serras I usaully get them around the 5 to 6" range just to help with my patients of growing them out. Pygos are fun to grow out tho. My reds are a blast.
