an interesting topic was brought up by joedizzleMPLS (did i get the name right? ) and i on another thread. Do pygo's do as well singly as they do in groups ?

ive always heard never keep less than 3 together but what is your opinion on this ?

this whole "you have to keep at least three" rule is outdated and i think it originally came into existence because of the confusion over the fact that people call piranhas a "shoaling" fish, therefore people just assume that they are like any other small shoaling fish such as neon tetras and will only feel comfortable if they are in large groups.

before anyone starts regurgitating information that they received from people that work in fish stores, at least read the information in this link to have a better understanding of their actual behavior....
http://www.opefe.com/piramix.html

i have read that page before and it is very imformative i try to refrain from saying shoal with piranhas there more of "roommates" for the most part where a shoal would in human terms be more like a family with people living with you cause you love them /need them where a piranha group is more like living with a bunch of buddies who share food and rough each other up every now and again

so if they don't shoal in the wild, then why would you argue that they NEED to be forced into small groups in aquariums?

i give up im done argueing i agree with you now. the information you have presented on the subject was... enlightening i see what you mean by that they dont need to be in groups to be kept happy (i just like to see em in groups becuase interactions between the fish is very interesting)

i'm not trying to start the whole "they're forced into a box" argument, you're grasping at straws now.... my point is that they don't stay in tight groups at all times in the wild, so why should it be an absolute requirement for them in an aquarium? i never said that keeping them in groups is bad, they do just fine in groups, what i am trying to debunk here is the misinformation that continues to be passed on that pygos NEED to be kept in groups.

and its posts like this that really piss me off going around saying someone dosent know as much as anotehr person jsut flat out is mean i think ive realised that by now that hes more knowledgable on the subject but i dont need some person i dont even know telling me that im sure your little god Joe (no offense joe hes treating you like one) will agree with me on that

^ well srry but you keep like saying that he is contredicking him self and stuff you need to realize that a fish (piraha) can do much better on it own when it doesnt have tank mates doing this

i think we should just keep the personal stuff outta this.... really doesn't matter how much anyone knows, everyone still has a lot to learn.

i just feel strongly about this topic because i get tired of seeing people getting flamed for having a solo pygo, especially when it is someone new to the hobby. these are unpredictable fish that can be kept together (although with no guarantee of success) or they can be kept solo.

i would say that a solo pygo that has never had large chunks bitten out of its fins or body and doesn't have to compete for food and is in no danger of being turned into lunch for venturing too close to another fish has a pretty good thing going.
