I have read a couple threads that mentioned rocks containing pyrite (fool's gold) can be harmful/deadly. I just noticed that a piece of the slate in my aquarium appears to have pyrite. I bought all the slate in a prepackaged box from petco, should I get rid of all of it? Or should I just get rid of the one piece and hope its ok?

Check to see that it is pyrite. True pyrite is iron sulfide, so prolonged exposure to water will cause it to leach sulfuric acid into the tank. If you can get a pic of the slate, I may be able to tell you. There are other shiny minerals that are not pyrite and can be used in a tank safely.

Pyrite is mostly found in quartz. a pic would help

Im pretty sure its pyrite, I will try and take a picture later though. It is gold colored, hard, brittle, and very granular. What else could it be?

I am just worried about whether or not the rest of the black slate is safe to leave in the tank.
