A psychotic dolphin has been attacking boats and knocking fishermen into the sea, the French media has reported, leading for calls for the mammal to be 'locked up'.

According to News24.com, the "enraged" cetacean, which has been named Jean Floch, has "destroyed rowboats, overturned open boats, flooded engines and twisted mooring lines". Two fishermen were knocked into the sea when the dolphin capsized their vessel.

Hneri Le Lay, the President of the Association of Fishermen and Yachtsmen on the port of Brezellec in Brittany, was reported as saying:

"He's like a mad dog. He has caused at least 1500 Euros worth of damage in the past few weeks. I don't want to see any widows or orphans. This could end badly". The dolphin has been a popular attraction on the Brittany coast for several years. Experts believe that the dolphin may have been excluded from its group and become violent as a result.

Sami Hassani of the Oceanapolis Department of Sea Mammals said: "because of their dominant personalities, and their sexual maturity, males could become dangerous".

The report says that police established a "crisis cell" two months ago after the dolphin was "involved in incidents" with several bathers and pleasure boat sailors. The unit recommended that swimming should be banned in the areas frequented by the aggrieved mammal.

Le Hay's solution? "We put mad animals to sleep", he was reported as saying. "I like dolphins, but this one should be removed or locked up very quickly".

An acoustic repellent may be used to drive the dolphin away from the area.

*ridiculous.

Kuda - the French are awesome - but totally wrong here. I hope nothing happens to that dolphin.

Just recently I saw a bunch of 7/8 foot dolphins here, just 10 foot or so off shore. Demonstrating their prowess, frolicking over the waves. They are beautiful.

Troll? I sure hope so.

Neil - No not the med. Although once on a Ferry to gibralta I saw literally a whole sea full of dolphins, all diving out of the water, amazing. Small though, they looked 3 or 4 foot.

This time it was the atlantico :D The sea is incredibly cold, yet these dolphins were huge, I'm not kidding, like 7 or 8 foot. They came so close. I live on the North West coast about an hour from Santiago de Compostela.
