It was actually hurricanes that tore open zoos that started the populations in FL, not the pet industry.

Have you ever seen a python?.

I have gone to Glades countless times and even drove a few nights while back but have never seen one nor know anyone who has.

I wasn't the only one at night driving slowly looking for one which was funny .

"old people housing"

lol thats a misconception . I would think at this point retired people are in the minority as far as moving here. Its us non retired who are moving in .

I think retirees are going to Carolinas .

"turn all of the landscape into condos "

Now that is true and that is the real killer of native fauna. In my area there is lots of wild lands but in 2.5 yrs since moving here at min 1/4 has been turned in to gated communities-golf courses -mini malls and condos .

In 10 yrs it will all be gone and every native box turtle-king/corn,etc will have been crushed . Politicians don't want to discuss at least leaving wild area for native fauna (I have tried at town meetings) they rather scream "python" not bulldozer.

Pythons dont give cash back for incentives, builders (bulldozers) do and lots of it! :)

sad that this happened but it show's that before purchasing any animal you should research it wisely and never ever ever ever release it in the wild.

This, Seth, could not come at a worse time with all the new legislation being prepared stateside.

People really do need to stop being alarmist. The fact of the pythons living in some parts of Florida needs to be taken as a fact and there already is nothing that can be done. Studies show that there is absolutely no risk that pythons may thrive elsewhere in the states ( besides Louisiana, eventually ) and that their impact is practically very small on the ecosystem.

How about I send some Aussie saltwater crocs over there for you, sort out the snake, might kill the alligators too, but the snakes would be gone. Problem solved.

The media here loves to scare which can be said about ANY media in every state.

The Hispanic media in S.Florida is the cheerleader when it come's to tabloid junk. While back they had a news story on walking cat fish.

They interviewd farmers in South America who claimed these cat fish ate their chickens and had taken a real impact on chicken farmers .

Every other "news" report the snakes get bigger and bigger .

I agree they don't belong wild in Miami but their impact is very small on eco system .

The problem has always been the lack of enforcing the python license law .

From what I understand the enclosure has to get the state okay and yrly "inspection" . Since they have NEVER enforced it till recently many keep pythons outside in thin screened patios or badly built rabbit hutch type enclosures.

The amount of pet stores who untill recently sold them even to kids was also part of the problem.
