I am looking to get my first snake soon, and have my mind set on a boa or python. I have done plenty of research and surely won't jump into this without plenty more.

I'm looking for a boa or python that-

-Isn't difficult with handling (this is my first snake)

-Stays under 5 or 6 feet

-And costs around $125 or less

Any suggestions? So far I've looked into Irian Jaya Carpet pythons, jungle carpet pythons, ball pythons, and hog island boas.

Thanks.

Well, for the price and size you are looking for. A lot of ppl would go with the ball python. They are easy to handle and would rather role into a ball then bite you. But if you try and get any other fancy Pythn. You start running the risk of a snake that needs more attention. Or it will be more prone to strike. I love the jungle carpet pythons. But they can be nippy if not held every day. I will always love the Red tailed Boa. We have a 6' guy and my daughter can pet the top of his heas. Ans he never flinches. He is like family.

So to answer your question. Ball python is what you are looking for. The Red tail boa is what we will always have. And no matter your choice is in the end. MAKE SURE THE SNAKE ALWAYS HAS THE RIGHT SIZED CAGE/HOME. A dog can live in a crate/cage its entire life. But is that fare for the dog?

I hate ppl that buy a dog and leave it in the backyard like a piece of lawn furniture. Id rather steal there dog and find it a better home. Then just let the mutt live in a box. Same with snakes, same with fish, and same with our children.

Common beginner snakes are ball pythons, red tail boas, corn snakes, king snakes, garter snakes. Im sure there are others. But as you can see. U have boas and balls with larger bodys. And then you have the rest. But with your list of wht you were looking to get. It says you want a ball python.

Carpet pythons all the way! They can stay around that size, and adults are typically very easy to handle, and they come in a variety of localities, so you can pick your pattern and size.

Carpets are not suitable first snakes, imho.....

According to my understandig of the OP query, in all aspects, only the ball python fits the description.

He wil soon get tired of it but will have learned the first snake basics to proceed from there.....

Reptile Expos are the WORST place to buy and to losse a potential herper.

Go to a breeder.
