Python or Boa

Carpets are not suitable first snakes, imho.....

According to my understandig of the OP query, in all aspects, only the ball python fits the description.

He wil soon get tired of it but will have learned the first snake basics to proceed from there.....
what would put them apart from the usual begginers? get a sub adult and they are rarely bitey

How about a rosy boa or spotted python? They're both small, max around 3ft, and they're more slender than the balls. I'm a huge fan of reticulated pythons so that's all I keep so I would've suggested a male super dwarf, but that is a little more than what you wanna pay.

i had a friend who kept a red tail boa that was about 4.5 feet long and she was just beautiful, great color and she was very easy to handle
but since everyone is saying ball phython...then i do to

we are talking first constrictor, guys....

we are not talking about the options for an experienced herper :)

Ball pythons are not the best beginners due to the fact that they go on hunger strikes and have lots of shedding problems without the correct humidity. Carpet pythons are actually very good starter snakes but can be a bit aggressive. Hog island boas are nowadays bred with red tail boas very often so you should be careful. your best bet are nicaraguan boas as they only get 4-5 maybe 6 feet at most. Easy feeders and very easy to care for.
