I have been using the system that hooks up to your faucet and pumps water directly into and out of your tank. I have not had very good luck with it, it seems to stress my fish out, and sometimes fish even die.

I am pumping it in at the same temperature, and I add a full dose of chlorine treatment before and after adding the new water. I suspect that mixing it in the aquarium like that dilutes it and the fish are being harmed by the chlorine. It's gotten to the point where I dread doing water changes.

Does anyone else do anything something similar and if so, do you have problems with chlorine or stress because of it? For my last water change I pumped the new water in a bucket, and treated it there. I did not have any problems this time, although I didn't have problems every time. Even if this isn't the problem, I may continue doing it this way, I like that I can double check the temp before the water goes in, even if I do make a mess.

Any thoughts or feedback are welcome.

I have been using a python for years and never once had issues. Testing your aquarium water and the water from your faucet would be first. If the parameters are okay then I really dont know..

Never had issues with my Python either. Are you pumping the water in full blast? I find that it's less stressful on the fish if you slowly pump water back in. Takes longer, but it works better.

I am pumping it full blast, but there isn't a lot more current than say my filter.

What should I be testing my tap water for? Ph? Chlorine?

It's not really about current, it's about how fast you're pumping in the new untreated water. I also dose it with Dechlorinator just once while you re-fill the tank.

Hmm OK. I will look into that. That may not work for me because my hot water is almost like an on/off switch and does not stay the temperature for more than 5 minutes or so. A slower fill would probably lead to me putting in 50 degree water if I wasn't watching it the whole time :-/.

I don't have them on me to check the exact name, but one is by APC and the other is in a yellow bottle I think by Tetra. The one in the yellow bottle turned goopy recently and I had to replace it.

I suggest Prime. I have been using it for years. Check tap like you would check your aquarium. Let us know the parameters.

Agreed with everyone else. Python is a life/back saver!!! Couldn't live without it at this point!
