Quarantine Tank
They're all different, but in my experience, they usually get more comfortable around 8"-10" They always tend to be more on the nocturnal side though. They may swim out to greet you when they're hungry.

Small CK usually hides as it's part of self defense from preds and come out during lights off. Once they start to settle down they will come out more even with lights on especially feeding time. The bigger they get the more active they become but when they get up to 18"+ they seems to come out but less active. Mine used to beg for food when it was 9-16 inches and will even grab food from the surface making some splashes. But now it just wait for me to drop the food and chill when feeding time is over.

Thanks for the input, anybody else?

I got mine as big as she is now, have nothing in my tank but gravel, she a traveling lady. All over the tank, never stopping. I love it when she comes up for air and slaps her tail as she goes back down.

This is an older photo, I just removed all the large rocks last night and added gravel because of the new Fire Eel I got.

the moment i introduced my 8" ck it really never hid, it is always active.

Unfortunately, most people who keep large CK's (10"+) keep them in tanks with nothing but a layer of sand or even bare bottom so it's going to be hard to get a lot of straight answers. Most don't have the option to hide when they get large.

Thanks for the input...

mine has two very large caves... he is in the one cave with lights off to eat.. he is use to me dropping down his dinner with the tongs and he reaches out with his big mouth to take the food.... then when i put the light on he comes out swims and looks around and slivers into the second cave... which is identical to the other cave...haha... i put the light off again and he swims out and looks around and goes back into the original cave ..in between is how i get my pics...so i have come to the conclusion he has a "Day House" And a "Night House"........:DView attachment 460856

Liz - thats so funny! Will he eventually outgrow his cave thou? And will you replace it or will there not be enough room at that point, making him free swimming?
