im trying to breed my pink cons and this is my first time breeding anything. what do i need to do? in the tank i have a piece of slate and the temp is about 78. is there anything else that i need to do or do i just need to let nature take its course?

my (male) con has female coloring but has fin extintions is this a male and my temp is about 78

I have had many many convicts of all colours and ONLY the females have had the orange coloration on their belly but I have heard of males having it too

naaaa thats not good males dont have the colors although females could have the extensions my friend and i breeding convicts(my first time) and it came out great a site you can go to is http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com they have alot about breeding them although some stuff is wrong you need to bump the temp to 80 degrees then they feel warm then have the babies to be insulated also have not only one hiding place because they will feel limited have a slate log stump and a tunnel to have a variety also have plants if they are with other tank mates be careful cause the tank mates can die the convicts will be together more the female will get plumpy then they will have the babies mine did it in the log stump so ya when thay start to get more aggresive then the already had made the eggs so they will hatch but when they do crank it to 82 then as the babies get bigger drop the temp and as fry they eat baby brine shrimp and frozen foods the mother takes care will the male defends the home and after there first spawn the will have more and more babies untill they will have to be food for your fish. my cons had so many babies that i had to sell them also the babies will breed with threre brothers and sister so they are just a baby machine well i hope this will help you cause that was my experiance so i hope you have fun!!!! :)

my female pink con has very long fin extensions, that's not the way to sex a convict . . . the orange on the belly is the most reliable means

check out this site.. it has some good info on breeding pink cons

Best method i've found is the overall shape of the con and the red on the belly. To breed cons you don't have to do anything out of the ordinary. They are the "Just add water Fish"--LOL...I have about 100 or so fry right now from a black female and a pink male. I keep my temp at about 80 degrees F and change 25% water once a week. You'll find that both parents are awesome parents attacking anything they feel will endanger their young...When you do have fry--remove them when the female lays another batch of eggs. This prevents the parents attacking them out of fear of the new batches safety.
GoodLuck,
Chris

im going to take these cons back to my lfs 1. due to all the confusion. 2.i have already had my lfs order new fish:)
