Hello MFK.

Next year my girlfriend and I want to travel a bit of America. We will be 19 at the time we travel, so we can't really hire a car for the 3-4 week period that we plan on staying. We were looking into the possibility of buying a used car and driving it around the country and selling it at the end. In Australia we have the 'dime a dozen' cars that are cheap yet still extremely good quality and value for money. What cars do you consider to be these sorts of cars, it doesn't matter the body shape, but preferably nothing pre-2000. We would probably buy from Florida or nearby, and sell in California. We are also looking to buy from a dealership, not privately, so that the paperwork is taken care of for us. Our budget for the car is around 5 grand.

Thanks.

Honda civic 4 door,4banger..or i heard in Australia they gave a ton of vw things such as bugs, busses and jettas??? Make sure you get that road side assistance from there to here

In Australia, Japanese built is always a good bet, wasn't sure how it is over there. aclockworkorange, we don't need to, but it'd probably come in handy on some long legs of the journey. Maybe a small wagon or hatchback of some sort.

Well you can get nice fleet maintained chevy and ford half ton vans that have been "retired" from service, take the back seats out and you have enough room for an air mattress, mini fridge or cooler, luggage, "fun" time, strange American hitchhikers, stray animals, etc.

Fleet cars aren't a bad idea, most here have full service history, and are sold through dealers so come with all the transfer papers and registration papers etc.

You can rent cars for next to nothing if you look around. Buying a car requires registration, tagging, license, emissions, etc. in most states.

The numbers just won't work out for 3-4 weeks...

If you are going to buy a car get a honda civic. Never had one, but my sister and a few of my cousin do and they said its reliable and great on gas.
