Quality Cheap Cars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the problem is that most rental companies won't rent to 19 year-olds, or if they do they charge a steep premium.

Good point....if seen this extra charge go anywhere from 10-20 extra a day. Even still, you find a decent 2000+ car that reliable will probably still cost more then the high rental rate for the month.

Automatics. Especially the V6 sixth gen accord (ask me how I know).

I see. I was aware of the odyessy problems with trannys as I have had a couple go bad. Wonder if the Accords V6 auto trans it the same as the odyessy's.

I'd suspect that a big cost of hiring with the proposed trip would be the one-way fee they charge. We're going to cop it for going from San Fran to Seattle, hate to imagine what it would be for going completely across country!!

Eric, coming from Oz you may be used to driving long distances, but what you're planning seems like a hell of a lot of driving for 3-4 weeks! Better to do one small part thoroughly than try fit everything into a rushed trip. We're heading to the US for four weeks and will be doing a bit of the west coast along with a week in Dallas for my sisters wedding. I found trying to fit any more than that in meant we'd be spending more time travelling than exploring.

Hence my van suggestion if they really are going to drive that much :)

I do think they are the same transmission...honda hasn't really got around to fixing it with a real solution.

I hope your stay in America is a good one...

Now for my money OP, unless you're a huge fan of endless hours on the road, I would choose a coast. Either do the Florida and New York and up the east coast line thing, or fly in somewhere into the SW and do the grand canyon, Vegas, LA, SF, and then up to oregon if you fancy some beautiful scenery. :)

x2...This country is too big to spend any quality time at each destination on a 3-4 week trip. You'd be better off picking a region(tri-state, etc.) or a single state and several location wherein. To do what you want to do, you need a whole summer and quite a bit in cash. Why not greyhound or amtrak it?

Thanks everyone for the replies.

We have found one California company that will rent to us, however, they have restrictions on the states we can travel in/through. They have two bases, one in Florida (that allow you only to drive in Florida) and another in LA, that allow you to drive no further east than Texas. This completely cuts out New York which is a definite must see.

The reason we want to see so much so soon, is because my girlfriend and I would like to look into moving to America. We want to see a lot, and don't want to go on a group tour, because what we want to see and what general tourists want to see are different.

A bronco is a nice idea, we have a 74 F100 and I love it, but they're far too thirsty to go cross country!

You really don't want to drive or have a care in NYC or many big cities. The cost of parking will be more than your daily rental car, in a lot of cases.

There are great (and inexpensive...like $25 or less) bus services from DC to NYC.

Matt
