Quarantine and decontamination of fish and plants

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 3 different tanks that I've used for a long time as quarantine/hospital tanks. I have a 5g, 20g High, and a 30g.

The 5g is mainly for new small fish or hospital. The 20H is for new plants mainly and fish that are too big for the 5g. The added height works well with tall plants like swords or anacharis or if you are like myself and put plants in pots. The 30g is mainly as a fry grow out or Quarantine tank.

All three of the tanks I got dirt cheap or free. The 30 was a leaker that I resealed, but it still looks terrible with a bunch of scratches. The 20H has two big scratches on either side and a friend just gave it to me. I think the 5 came from a garage sale. Garage sales are the perfect place to look for ugly tanks, but ugly tanks are the best Quarantine/Hospital/Grow out tanks.

Always quarantine for 4-6 weeks. Only medicate if needed.

With fish a QT tank is just a smaller tank then your display that you should keep any new fish in for at least a month with out sick, while monitoring that they don't get any sickness.

As for plants I give them a dip in a chlorine bath, and that should kill any nasties on them, and kill off algae to, which is good.

Hello; Can you give a bit more info on the chlorine bath. What concentration chlorine? How long are the plants dipped?
