Quarantine tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not saying I necessarily agree with all he says but here is one video. Talks about not really feeding for a week or maybe once:

"Feed once 4 or 5 days after we get a hold of them" in a 7 day quarantine so assumption being back to regular feeding after 7 days?

Aside from unimportant stuff...like providing food to animals that have likely been subjected to long-term neglect and abuse like most feeder fish are...

...why did you dose with Erythromycin? Irresponsible use of antibiotics like this causes all kinds of problems with the development of resistant bacteria, affecting far more than just fish. Have you never heard of the extreme measures taken by some hospitals to combat these ? Throwing a dose of antibiotics into the water "just in case..." is extremely foolish and potentially dangerous.

Up here in Canuckistan, antibiotics for fish tanks (along with a lot of other fish medicines) are no longer legally available; many local aquarists are crying about this because they can no longer behave in the irresponsible manner described here.

I know the one lfs gets them in, puts them in a big tank and then bags them up in dozens. They stay in the bags if not sold for two days before being rebagged if still there. Usually they are sold first. But I feel that is incredibly inhuman and also the worst possible scenario for your fish.

It's awesome you've got a LFS that's so busy they can pre-bag feeder fish they sell so much! I haven't had a fish/pet store in my area that did that level of business in probably 30yrs.

It's inhumane for sure, but at least most of us know by now that a quality ingredient pellet or dry food is a much better option all the way around for your staple feed.

This is addressed in the video above.

Yes, rarely this can cause immunities however this is less risky than the spread of probably disease.

Are you referring to the video from Aquarium Co-op? The fish dealer? Please...

Do a bit of research on antibiotic-resistant bacteria; not just in fish, but also in general use.

You asked why he did it, there is your explanation of why.

Good point, well taken. I should clarify that I am suggesting he (the OP) re-consider his casual use of antibiotics because of the huge mass of data pointing to the potential problems with this method, rather than finding a tropical fish retailer who states that it's all good.

i want to dose meds so it wont spread any disease into my main tank. he said iit works for him for years and other youtuber used hiis method too. its not that i use it without knowing the problem of dosing meds without knowing i just want to get rid of any kind of disease or parasect it got its better to be safe than sorry when ur main tank got wiped out.

I consider a 1 week quarantine barely scratching the surface, I quarantine fish at least 3 months before adding to the main tank.
many diseases take at least that long to become evident.
A friend who runs a public aquarium, Q.T.s for 6 months.
That said, I barely ever use feeder fish, and consider using them an epidemic waiting to happen, and as a former microbiologist, I find the random use of antibiotics the perfect way to produces resistant bacteria, and create another plague waiting to happen.
Might not be today, or in 3 months, but the likelihood (to me) is not worth the risk.

ya the point that im making this thread is that why all the fish died all at once when i dose it the 2nd time.
