what do you do with the quarantine tank? as in chemical wise?

Just run it like a normal tank and watch the quarantined fish carefully for any signs of illness or disease.

If your fish does have an illness then raise the temperature to at least 84 degrees F and pour salt in it. Keep up with the process till your fish is fully recovered.

Oops Edit!: Also before you put salt in you should do at least a 65% water change and do one about every 3 days. Everyday if your doing 15%.

how long should you quarantine a new fish?
4 weeks just to be safe. It takes a lot of patience and perseverance which most people don't have.

nothing at first... then depending on how the fish are i treat as needed... whatever meds fit the disease.. make sure the fish are tolerant to whatever meds you are using.. same goes for salt.. temp is also an "as needed" treatment..

In saltwater, QT is an absolute must for a minimum of 4 weeks. Some species are more susceptible to disease than others, but all go into QT for a minimum of 4 weeks with close observation.

In the past, I never did QT freshwater fish, but looking back, it is clear that I was playing russian roullette. Going forward, I will QT all freshwater for 4 weeks too.

But how about feeder fish? Dropping in a feeder fish with ich can expose the entire tank. Should we really QT feeders too?

great thread by the way...

Definitely. They are several times more likely to be ill or have parasites than your average "pet quality" fish due to the way most of them are produced.

Anyone who has lost a favorite fish because they didn't quarantine never forgets it.

in qt, starting the day the fish is added to the tank, I start feeding with medicated food for internal parasites (de-worm flakes), and use some prazi-pro as well. It has worked well for me recently

definately QT commercialy bought feeders for a cpl reason 1)health issues 2) it allows you to feed them most feeders are kept under horrid conditions feeding them
for a few weeks does no harm and only improves their general health.
