Query .. not a troll

There is a lot of advice given out on this forum about a great many things. How much weight can my floor hold? How many fish can my filter support, how thick should my glass be? etc etc.

So what happens when something goes wrong? Is the forum and/or advice poster liable? Some projects are small but some are potentially life threatening. Has anyone given any consideration towards this before handing out advice?

if you walk into home deopt and ask some one how to build a house and he tells you, you build the house and it crashes down... you cant sue the man because its just ADVICE, its the mans fault for not contracting pros to do the job... but if a profetional did the job and a contract was singed then he is held liable. all advice given out on this site should be given and taken with a grain of salt... And thats why its a fourm, for discutions if i dont agree with you i say i dont and vice versa...

Ultimetly i dont think that anyone over the internet can be held liabe for giveing out and opinion, because its the end user that decides whether to use the advice or not.

So you are saying all the professionals here shouldnt give advice? There is also the moral aspect. I would feel pretty bad if I gave out sound advice but to someone who didnt provide me all the details or misinterpreted what I said and they ended up killing themselves....

Makes me think twice before I post.

Yes, I think this should always be the prime consideration when answering someone's request for knowledge.

Any and all information I give out can be backed up and is never anything I either haven't used or a derivative thereof, or wouldn't use on my own fish and aquaria.

As in life, responsibility falls on the person making the final decision after comparing all avenues of thought.

I do this professionally and have a reputation to protect. All my clients are by referral only, and that's the way I want it, an error on my part stops that referral process dead so I can't be lackadaisical in my actions and answers.

Good, that way you will give better answers too.

And this is why you don't assume anything that could have damaging repercussions (knowing what the repercussions are is the most important part of knowing the answer).

Don't answer questions that you don't actually know the answers to.

Ask leading questions.

If you don't have all the information to make a decision, just don't, it's that simple.

Arrgggggg possable Lawsuit!!!! Neo Shut the forum down now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LoL, Just joking. ;) Forums are just for advise, its different If someone actually offers to build you a big aquarium, builds it and it then falls appart due to him not using the correct thickness of glass or not enough silicone. With forums, as far as advise is concerend, what works for some may not work for others.

Members offer advice. They don't lay down edicts. Any decision made, by the member making the query, is solely the decision and responsibility of that member. It doesn't matter what advice is offered, complete research is the most basic necessity before diving into any project which has the possibility of risk towards persons or property.

In essence... own your own shibby.
