question 55 gal mbuna

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Breeding isn't important to me. And the local petstores are 1hr+ away from me. So my well water is way different then their's i'm sure. And the petstores are petsmart and petco lol. I'm not even sure if they have mbuna?

Most likely if they are like the petcos and petsmarts around here they don't know what mbuna means. African cichlids are african cichlids. Well water is usually harder than town water anyway. Your well water may be perfect the way it is. I am a breeder and I don't have to do much to my well water to make it perfect for my fish.

So where should I order my fish from if petsmart and petco don't have them?

You can order online or from breeders on here or other site's classifieds. If your fish are not wild caught and are born and raised in lower PH can you for sure say that harder water is better for them. I keep with the idea that stable is much better. Now if you have wild caught that is a different story. You can also have high ph without chemicals if your water is already that high.

Have you tested the ph from your well fishnoob to see what it is?

no whats the proper way of testing it? also i just called 6 nurserys and they don't have any rock i want, most don't know what im talking about lol. can i use those clay plant pots? if i sand them down make them all smooth? i really dont want to order rocks online, cant imagine shipping and i have no idea how many i would need.

I raise my ph but most of my stock is wild caught. I do agree in some cases that stability is more important. you can get cheap test kits most places. your local petsmart should have them and a decent ph test kit is only around $5.

My well is also 7.6 from the tap which is perfectly suitable for cichlids anyway. Being a breeder it is to my benefit to raise the ph to what I feel is a good level for better success and better quality. If you have seen any pics of my fish you can see the quality.

like mike said order from breeders or classifieds. First decide what you want then look for who has them. You pay shipping but getting good quality fish from knowledgeable people is sometimes better than buying random fish from large lfs like petcos and petsmarts that don't have knowledgeable staff.

exactly!

http://www.holeyrockoftexas.com/index.htm place for at the same or better price delivered as petshops

That really depends on the look you want and how many fish you plan on stocking. I've seen some tanks with only a couple of rocks and others that seem to have more rocks than water in their tanks! I agree with the others that stability is more important than a set PH. I would test your well water to see where you are starting at and go from there.

Holey rock has a couple of benefits: it helps to raise and stabilize PH while at the same time providing hiding spots and territories for the mbunas. Just make sure that you have enough territories for them. You have too little, and fights will break out.

Look at the hundreds of photos in the photo lounge to get an idea of how many rocks you like.
