Hi all,

I have a 2.5 gallon all glass tank I recently bought. I read somewhere that if the water temp is too hot in a glass tank it could cause cracking/etc. I can't remember if I used hot or just lukewarm water when I first got the tank to clean out the dust that was inside it. Should I be concerned the tank's silicone will crack or the glass will break and leak out all over my dressertop if i did use hot water to clean it?

Thanks in advance for replies.

2.5 gallons eh? i thought this was monsterfishkeepers. lol. i'm kidding. i've never heard of tanks cracking or leaking because you cleaned it with warm/or hot water.

LOL it's not my only tank no worries on that :D

I had read something about it somewhere and I just wanted to run it by the MFKers :)

If you were able to stick your hand in the water you cleaned with and did not scald yourself it is probably safe. The only issue I could see is if you put in boiling water then emptied it and put in ice cold; the extreme temperature variance may cause an issue with the thin glass on a 2.5g.

I was able to have my hand in there at all times , so looks like I'm ok. Thanks ya'll ;)

You can fill tanks with very hot water. You just don't want to put in very cold water on a hot glass surface because it will cause it to crack. Glass heaters can break that way too.

Just fill it up with cool water outside or in the sink and make sure it doesnt leak.

No, that temperature difference would crack it much sooner
