Question about a barter with the lfs

Around here, tanks go for much more that $2/gallon on Craigslist. I bought my 125 on CL and the lfs joked that I beat him to it. He isn't going to sell it but instead he is going to use if for one of his display tanks. The dimensions are 48L x 18W x 21H.

FWIW, I paid $300 for the 125g and that was really cheap compared to the other large tanks I've seen posted.

It sounds like I should shoot more for $1/gal? At $.50/gal I'll keep it and use it for the sump/refugium.

I wouldn't give more then a buck a gallon. And if he offers you more I would take it. He's in the business to resell not collect old tanks. I think you'd be lucky to get $1.00 gallon.

How I look at, i'll buy tanks at $2.50 per gallon for a WHOLE pristine set up. If its scratched up, nicked, or something is wrong with it, price goes down dramatically. These people on craigslist make me laugh, not too long ago I saw a 34 gallon nano cube for 1300 . If they want more than 2.5 dollars per gallon they dont know what they have and they want way too much.

If its just the tank, go for a dollar a gallon. Diy stands are cheap, I just built my stand for my 110 for 15 bucks? a bit under that standing around 5 feet tall.

Selling a tank goes the same way. 2.5 per gallon if its a complete set up. And sell just your tanks a dollar a gallon if its in good condition.
