I have used some bio-media for over 40 years, as long as it hasn't been contaminated by some disease.
And even then, I just soak it in bleach, and recycle it.
If you test and don't get an ammonia detect, the media is viable
One thing I do, do, is regularly clean biomedia by rummaging it around in water change water to knock off the sludge that can gunk it up and choke the bacteria, by preventing aerobic activity.
To make this easier I put media in mesh bags, making it simple to lift the bag from the sump, swish it around a few seconds in old water and toss it back. There is a theory that this rummaging around also knocks off some old not so robust biofilm allowing new, younger and more viable colonies to proliferate
