My Black Arowana is EXTREMELY easy to spook. He's about 15-17 inches long and is kept with a diverse array of tankmates. He can easily eat most of his tank mates actually, but he's a big pussy cat. By far the most docile of the arowanas I've kept. I have problems with him running into the side of the glass and knocking a scale off.

In my experience, all the species you can get in the US are like this. I've had silvers, blacks and a jardini. All of them were skittish in their "teen" years. About 12-20 inches long. After that they mellow out.

It is my personal opinion that the particular species whether bicirrhosum or ferreirai, is no more skittish than the other. The individual fish silver or black is going to react to the environment they are in.

If the specimen is in a tank with semi-aggressive to aggressive tank mates the fish will spook easily as they really don't want to get nipped or chased.

Whereas, in a tank with mates such as bottom dwelling slow movers and Plecos, Aros are much more laid back. That's why I have a soft spot for my Chaka Chacka Cats. :headbang2

I've had Aros both Silver and Black that hand fed and knew when I approached the tank it was time for some goodies :D.

i just got a 5 inch aro this weekend, @ the LFS he wasnt spooked when i walked up to him.

But in my tank he always got spooked when i came near him. What i do is, i will stand right next to him for a few minutes, and drop his food one piece at a time, until he eats them all. So i spend about 5-10 minutes watching him eat. He is already starting to approach me when i come near the tank

Oh, he is in a 125 gallons, and i had him for 3 days now

i just got a 14inch black 2 weeks ago and i love her its the most amazing fish ive ever had

it just depends on da fish's personality
