I'm using 1.5" PVC for my overflow and I'm planning on using a rio 2100 (675 gph). I was wondering if I would lose flow if I used 1" PVC on the return piping to the tank, as the outlet from the pump is only 3/4".

I would recommend going with the 3/4", but you could use 1" if you wanted. It shouldn't make too much of a difference on a standard tank.

thank you for the advice, one more question.. I have a 180 gallon tank, do you think that 5 turnovers an hour is good for 5 koi (currently 5 in but want the setup to last for them)? also, I'm planning on converting a 20 gallon tank into a wet/dry, is that enough room for bio filtration on the 180 gallon?

5 time turnover should be OK for the fish, but I recommend getting a bit bigger of a tank for your sump.

yes...I have a 120g koi display for 3 koi and am using a QuietOne 3000, @ 3ft for 650 gph on a wet/dry for 5x turnover and it works fine...nice and clear water, and my parameters are 0-0-<40...;)
Some will tell you Aquariums are too small to properly keep koi, but they do make a beautiful display especially with a blacked out tank with natural substrate IMO...:D

around what size would you recommend for the sump then?

I would suggest a 55 or a 40 long.

You could make the 20G work, but you run more risk of overflowing the sump if you do not have it set up properly

I was curious about that as to how to keep it from overflowing. what exactly keeps it from overflowing and would it hurt to keep the sump in a large cargo tote for overflowing reasons? and if not then would the 20g be sufficient in terms of filtration?
