Question about first DIY wet/dry + overflow

I was curious about that as to how to keep it from overflowing. what exactly keeps it from overflowing and would it hurt to keep the sump in a large cargo tote for overflowing reasons? and if not then would the 20g be sufficient in terms of filtration?

Overall, the overflows in the tank should stop almost as soon as the water stops coming into the tank. From there you will get residual water flor from the pipes that fills in the sump. You just have to make sure that you sump can handle the extra water. Having the sump inside a tote would help with that and prevent any accidents. I think a 20 would do the job just fine as far as filtration is concerned.

One last question. I'm going to use bio balls as the bio filtration. I found some that are 1" and was wondering how I could figure out how many I need.

depends on how big your bio media chamber area is (im assuming wet/dry)


i prefer to make the bio chamber the largest you can physically go with without cutting into space for the pump assuming your going with a standard 20 gallon (which correct me if im wrong is 24x12x16) i would make it atleast 12 x 12 x 14 if i were you. this leaves you a few inches for mechanical filtration media and enough space to make a chamber for your heaters as well

id also use pot scrubbers as bio media there much cheaper and have comparable surface area (filling a wet/dry chamber thast 12x 12 x14 with bio balls would cost a preety penny

Somehow I didn't think to just take the measurement in inches since they're 1 in bio balls. That would be expensive as hell. I found a case of 288 scrubbies for 56 on amazon.. I'll probly go with that instead.. still expensive for me though, but I guess I should've figured that...
