Hello,

As my first time posting I want to say hello. I am here to ask a question about my fish combination and the issue that has come about. Let's get down to the details:

Blood parrot cichlid
jack dempsey
belly crawler pike - female
36 gallon tank. Before making this the first assumption to any issues, let me start by saying I've purchased these fish as youngsters. All of them are less than a couple/few inches at most. This is also a temporary setup while they do some growing and then I'd like to move them to a 75-100 gallon tank.

The tank has been up and going for a couple of months now. Originally the pike was the least aggressive of the 3. Just cruising the tank, moving loads of rocks around in her mouth and so on. The parrot was the most aggressive in the beginning, but not actively seeking fights. Just defending his log inside. The dempsey has always been the middle child. After adding some more shrubbery and a multi layered log and a rock with a hollow back and holes (both to alleviate the pikes new found aggression) but to no avail. The parrot has since become the gentle giant (not much of a giant yet) and the dempsey just relaxes. The pike though is constantly weaving around the tank and making it a point to drive both of them around. Jabs and snaps, 90% of the time missing. But still scaring the other two. I've rearranged the tank and even removed things in hopes that it would possibly reset the territory issue but nothing has helped - only making the jd and parrot easier targets.

My question is this, the pike harasses all day (no exagerration) and I believe through the night too as I've seen some mildly dinged fins on random mornings. Should I be concerned? Will the jd and parrot out grow her and make them less of a target? I feel like I've taken every diplomatic approach to this short of getting rid of her and I want tp do what's best for the majority. The jd and parrot even swim together now as if they're a school, im not sure if they've just bonded or of its out of fear.

Thanks for the help

Honestly that something inevitable. Even if you rearrange or remove certain tank objects the aggression will be present. Try to lower temps and upgrade tank ASAP if you want the others alive. But I had more aggressive cichlids in the past where the fishes being dominated would have been dead by now (flowerhorns and red devils). GL.

Id say that the pike has out grown the grow out tank maybe not in size but aggression. Time to move it to a larger set up or sell it back. If your dessperate to not do either of those you could try adding a school of dithers to alleviate the targets on the other two fish.

Thanks for the input. I was well aware that there would be disputes in the tank, hence the cichlid breed. Its not the aggression that bothers me - its the recurrence rate. Id say the fish get less than a couple minutes break between each harassment all day. The fish store said they'd take her as donation. I just need to know if that's what needs to happen

Thank you djlamonica. Im hesitant to upgrade to a 75-100 just yet as I am moving into an apartment in december. Id do it then.

That's just the way those pikes are, I had one for a week when I had my community, he just wouldn't stop. Bigger tank will help.

As much as I don't want to do it I will likely donate her to the fish store. I just see how calm the other two are and I don't feel like getting a much larger tank only to see it still happening. She's obviously just very temperamental as I was being told the parrot would definitely be the worst. Its turned out to be the opposite. So I suppose it'll just be those two or perhaps a new addition. Something that doesn't view a 36much gallon tank as its own at 3 inches. Any suggestions? Perhaps a catfish? There are tons of hiding spots and within a few months I intend to upgrade.

I'd say hold off until you move and get that larger tank as you don't want to go through the same thing now.

My exp. With a few different cats and cichlids is you rarly see that cats that's just they few I've tried. Upside down squeker and a few others I can't remeber. Try a small group of yoyo loaches maybe.

I won't do loaches again as I've had a bad experience with one in the past. I don't really mind how often the catfish would be seen, I just wouldn't mind a third fish (as well as it being a bottom feeder) around in the tank. I tend to like catfish as they are relaxed critters for the most part. I feel like if I got a large tank and only had the two fish in it that the tank would appear bland. Even in adult form as two fish in a 75 or 100 gallon tank it'd come off as bland. But I'm trying to keep the number low as it helps destress the tank and is easier to maintain/keep disease at bay.
