Question about frame and resealing

Ok, so in the next few days I plan on pulling the old seal out and resealing my tank. My question though is about the frame....one one of the corners it is cracked, what should I do about that? Do I or can I just add some silicone to that spot too, or is there something else that should be done?

you can take the frame out since you are resealing the tank and fix it outside, then put it back and reseal again

You mean just take the entire frame off...then add it back when I'm done resealing the tank? Don't I have to have the frame to hold it together?? If I am taking the frame off of it, do I just use silicone to stick it back on again?

So if this sounds obvious to you I'm sorry, I have never done a frame before.

You need to know what caused the frame to crack if possible.

The frame serves two purposes, one to hold the tank together and the other to keep anything from chipping the edge of the glass, causing a weak spot.

Measure the tank width on both ends to see if the cracked end is wider, do the same for the length too.

Re-sealing the tank should not involve taking the glass apart, just stripping the old silicone from the inside, so the frame removal should not have any effect on the tank for repairs. You can order frames from some LFS but I would take the frame in if they say they can order it and let them measure it so if it comes in wrong they have to make good on it.

I know I don't take the glass apart , I can reseal with out a problem...I just didn't know what to do about the crack in the frame. I will measure all around tomorrow and see if there is a difference in any of it.

Can I just re-due the frame..do I have to go through the LFS, wouldn't it be more cost effective to just get some new wood or something like that? If I can't then yes I will go to the LFS, but if possible I would much rather just re-due it myself.

That just looks like the wood trim/veneer on the tank, not a structural component. Find a stain that matches, fill the crack and stain over it.

So I went out and measured everything today, I measured top, bottom and middle of all sides. They were all the same. Length=60" X width=13" x height=21 1/8" now the height is including the frame bottom and top.

Jim, so I should get what wood glue to fill it with or is there something else I should look into?

So it is wood and not plastic?

If it's wood it most probably is not structural so just glue and clamp it together.

Sounds like you've sealed a tank before so I'll just wish you luck then .

Yes, it is wood and yep..I've resealed a tank or two in my time LMAO!!

Well, of coarse it is suppose to rain the next 3 flippin days so...it will be a few more days till I get started then.

Use Gorilla Glue (urethane wood glue) for the wood trim! It is stronger then silicone. It is also waterproof.
