I guess it would depend on where they broke their backs. If it was more towards the caudal peduncle, then they may have limited movement, but if the break is up closer to the neck, then chances are they won't have any movement in the rear fins.

I dropped my friend off earlier and can see that the whole back portion seems to have slumped and no movement. when he swims he heads straight to the bottom....andjust sits on the bottom not eating.

all bad signs:(

Mine has stopped eating. His mobility seems fine but the bend remains and he's not eating for some time now.

Have you tried holding a piece of food right in front of his mouth? Maybe hold a feeder in some tongs and place it right in front of him. It can take a while for a fish to recover from an injury, and start eating again.

gars breaking their backs has become a common thing it seems.mine broke his back twice and it has a permanent curve now.but he eats fine and swims fine. just dosent look elegant like the other gars. but i dont think it should die of that broken back.

My gar died, i don't know if his back was broken but he lasted only like half an hour after the indicent occured, he was a gator.

For awhile he ate, but his appetite got less and less, and after awhile he would take some food but not swallow it.
