Just looked up gymnogeophagus, maybe they would be nicer than acaras. Except what I read said they need a winter "cooling period" for 2-3 months. I don't have anyway of doing that.

To give them a cool down, just don't use a heater.
Although for mine, to really cool them down, I put them in an unheated kiddy pool with other Uruguayan cichlids on the floor in the basement where temps easily hi 50'F.

Consider biotodoma cupido, they are similar to geos and stay around the 4" mark

just looked up both of those, I think I like the bolivian rams.

I don't have a heater, but I don't have another room like a basement for cooling. I love my fish, but I need warmth in winter!

Think I might be sold on the Bolivian rams, they are a reasonable size.
