Just looked up gymnogeophagus, maybe they would be nicer than acaras. Except what I read said they need a winter "cooling period" for 2-3 months. I don't have anyway of doing that.
To give them a cool down, just don't use a heater.
Although for mine, to really cool them down, I put them in an unheated kiddy pool with other Uruguayan cichlids on the floor in the basement where temps easily hi 50'F.
