The nicest looking jd I ever owned came from petsmart,, but it's probably the exception rather than the rule. Just get a half dozen & cut 'em loose. See what you wind up with for looks. I think I paid like 6 bucks a piece for my petsmart jd's.

females have more blue on there gill plates, males not so much.

well first off petsmart and petco do sell JDs but petsmart will not have females they dont keep them because they dont want the fish to spawn and i think petco is the same but sometimes a few females find there way in there, soif you want to be sure you are getting a female go online and get one thatis the best way to know you have a female,but i dont really know any site that sell fish i normaly got to maru petstore its a private store so they have more to pick from than petco or petsmart
I've heard the theory that Petsmart stores will only carry one gender of fish or the other... but I own male & female Dempseys that were bought at the same Petsmart on the same day... I also saw both male & female Dempseys at my local Petsmart within the last couple of weeks... I also saw a young male and a young female Convict guarding eggs at my local Petsmart within the last couple of months...
This is a prime example of internet nonscence being passed around as fact and ultimately misleading people... it's a real shame more people don't verify such random information before passing it along.
