so i am building a moving bed filter in a 55 gallon drum and would
like to know what you guys would do. i have to put the 2 air wands on the
bottom of the barrel and would like to know if you would use suction cups
alone or if you would silicone them down... your thoughts?

I wouldn't silicone anything man. No need. Suction cups would work, zip tie them to something heavy, or use 1 heavier stone that will always sit on the bottom? Not sure what your plan is with the wands and what's powering them, all I do know is don't silicone anything if you don't have to.

Yeah get something to weigh it down maybe a PVC elbow and drill a hole and run the lining to it.

ha!! i wasnt even thinking of weighing them down

btw im going to be using air..

We figured when you said air wands ;)

Goal of anything filter related is ease of change and flexibility. Fixing something down permanently or putting something somewhere it is hard to access is ALWAYS the last option.

Over time the air wands will clog, so you need to be able to change easily. I use big heavy rubber ones made for ponds. When they start to clog, just bend them and the crud breaks up and flakes off

Dave this is a good question that should be asked. Do you prefer your air defuser or the big airstone in you k1 chamber. You have seen both ways first hand.

Me personally I would avoid air wondering and go with one large diameter stone to place in the center maybe 7-8 inch diameter

Ya the 7" round aluminum oxide airstone works much better than 4 separate smaller rectangular airstones made into a diffuser using PVC.

I didn't try one big diffuser.. I originally had (2) 12 inch diffusers but I didn't like the fine bubbles as they didn't seem to move the water enough.. so I made my own... I will post a pic when I get home.
