Ahhh, I meant to say a Sanchezi is vastly different than a Spilo..

Your fish is a Serrasalmus Sanchezi. There are two common variance in color. One is red and the other is purple. Yours is the red variant.

I agree its a sanchezi. Best way to tell is to get a good close up of the scutes. I have no idea whether or not it's purple or common. Can't tell from the pic.

Serrasalmus sanchezi and Serrasalmus spilopleura are actually members of the same genus (Serrasalmus), but are members of different complexes within the genus. S. sanchezi is in a member of the rhom complex, S. spilopleura is not a member of a complex per se, but there is DNA evidence indicating that cross breeding with other species has lead to considerable polymorphism with in the species, so spilopleura may in fact be considered it's own complex one day.

When sanchezi's first became available in the aquarium trade, there was some confusion over the species' origin which gave rise to the common names "spilo CF (complex form)" and "red spilo." These common names are misnomers, S. sanchezi is actually a member of the rhom complex which means they are much more closely related to S. rhombeus than S. spilopleura. This misnomer persists which is why people still use the incorrect common names.

Nice fish. He won't get to big either. I hope this helps clear up some misconceptions.

This Sanchezi,good fish,enjoy it
