Question about oxydoras niger

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alrighty that sounds like a plan. Gonna give it a whirl. Gotta keep the red tail fed well now any way cuz I have a pbass thats about ready to go into the big boy tank and I don't want to give him any extra reasons to get swallowed.

I trained my niger to eat in the morning, I have a little light by one corner of the tank. When the light goes on he gets fed, comes out and sits , waits for his two handfuls of pellets, cut up shrimp and beefheart.

I feed the more active fish in the tank first then I turn on the light for the niger. Everyone else is full so he has easy access to food. other wise during the day you would think he's just a piece of driftwood.
he's close to the 22" mark now..

Well it seems the knowledgeable have spoken. Oxydoras niger are just lazy. I'll have to have a word with the people responsible for writing the catfish profiles on the internet and let them know they are full of it. I shall commence new feeding regimen.

My niger vacuums the whole tank as well. I hardly ever see him eat anything, but whatever lands on the floor at night is gone by morning. He keeps growing like crazy, so I'd imagine he's getting something.

These fellas are pretty sweet looking when they get big. Buuuut... I have un-fun thoughts of what the process is going to be like when its time to move him out of the 180 acrylic to a bigger home which involves moving a large powerful fish with giant razor blades sticking out of his sides though the 5x24 inch access holes in the top. I see thrashing, jumping, yelling, and bleeding in the not to distant future haha. Gonna be great. But I suppose if Luke can hit a small thermal exhaust port only 2 meters wide, I suppose we can figure it out how to transfer a few large fish.

Normally, I'd say the towel method, but for that, I'd say break out an old pillowcase you'll never use again, and go very slow.

I'm hoping mine will go directly to his forever home (a pond) in a few months before he gets too big.
