Question about Pacu's, anyone that knows about them please read.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you have room where you live, you could always buy some kind of cattle trough to house them. They're inexpensive (compared to equally sized tanks) and will last you until you build some kind of plywood tank. I recommend a plywood because most people, myself included, cannot afford either a glass or an acrylic tank of the size needed by a Pacu, nevermind two Pacus.

Gempler's has 400 gallon troughs, with 6.5' diameters and 2' height, for about $350. With shipping, it'll come to around $420 (although the reason I ordered online was that there aren't any kind of farm supply stores around here... if there are some near you, take advantage).

It might be more practical to get rid of the fish (or like my mom keeps saying, "One day you'll come home and find your Pacu in the pot."), but I know just how much personality they have, and how attached you can get to them. But if you don't have the room, then I recommend you rehome them (or humanely euthanize and nom nom nom them).

My pacu have outgrown their 300 gallon tank.

thats a pic of a pacu caught in the wild, fish grow differently in captivity but I am fully aware of the size they can get to, I just wanted to see if a 50 gallon tank was good enough for a little while I plan on getting a much bigger tank in the future when I move just signed a year lease I dont live that big of a place now im in a studio apt in chicago, thanks for the comment

People that read this, I plan on saving money and getting a much bigger tank in the future I am just wondering if the 55 tank was going to be good enough for roughly a year

thank you guys, you got me thinking about my own pacu problem. I bought a red pacu about 2 months ago about the size of a silver dollar. It is now larger then my handprint. It was cheap and reminded me of a red belly so I bought it. Now its getting very big and eats EVERYTHING. I cannot even get any meal worms to my rtc because it eats EVERYTHING lol. I will see how to get rid of this hungry fast grower

no

It aint going to work IMO 2 Pacu BARE MINIMUM for just ONE YEAR is a 125gal and that's pushing it....
Cut your losses and take them back I look at my 180gal and I know it couldn't fit one Pacu....
Oh AVOID ID Catfish/sharks they get bigger than Pacu

PS: True that's a WC Pacu but WC Pacu get over 30" FR get to 22"-24"+

:grinno: No don't worry, he didn't mean ALL catfish, there are many species that stay small. My favorite? Cory catfish!

Seriously, keeping these creatures is a HUGE commitment, even more than most other monster fish species kept on MFK, like arowana. Pacu mom just built on addition to her house (if I'm not mistaken) to keep her monster pacu. Seriously just save yourself the headache and cut your losses, if you didn't do your research and planning before buying these beasts I can pretty much guarantee you aren't ready to keep them.
