Over there
I have a 150g tank with just an endli bichir and would like to get a payara, but I understand most of them get pretty big. Is there one that stays smaller that could live in my tank for life?

First, I would like to direct you to the the Payara Captive Care Guide:

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?183738-Payara-captive-care-guide-(1-Viewing)

That thread should cover any questions you have.

To help you though, if you want to keep a payara for life in a 150, you're really limited to a Hydrolycus scomberoides.

If you stepped up to a 180 you'd be able to keep a Hydrolycus tatauaia, Rhaphiodon vulpinis or a Cynodon gibbus. Hydrolycus armatus would need a MUCH larger tank and Hydrolycus wallacei is not present in the hobby.

I vote for red tail tats. They take very long to reach a foot long so you are ok for 2 years or so.

So it looks like it'll be a shoal of tats or scombs. Where is a good place I can go about getting a few? My lfs can get them but they never know what kind they are. I just don't want to accidentally grab an armatus and have to rehome it later.

lol you don't just randonly find an armatus...even though mislabled cheap armatus have been popping up lately... 0__O

You're living in Orange County, CA. all LFS within 40 miles radius are carying scombs, extremelly rare for them to have tats (last time some store mislabled tats and sell those at scomb price but like I said it's extremmly rare and when it does happen these fishes gone within few days. You might check at Tong's store he seem getting baby scomb in regularly but thier price is quite expensive...good luck hunting :P

haha I just went to Tong's last week and they had 2, but he wasn't selling them. He said they had 4 earlier in the week, but someone came and bought them all. They didn't know what kind they were though. Have you seen them yet? I just ask about not knowing if it's a scomb or not because I saw an add on craigslist recently and someone was selling a bunch of baby armatus for $20 each and that seemed pretty cheap compared to the prices I've seen.
