Question about reintroducing a beaten fish.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There was a study done while back that basically showed that once a fish take on a roll of being submissive, they will remain in that role regardless of the size of the fish that are in the tank with them. That includes if the fish is moved to an entirely different tank with different fish. If you put that Oscar back in the tank, it will likely be killed when you least expect it. It might have been asked before, but what size tank are these fish in?

Wow Mo, that's really interesting! Do you have a link to this study if it's posted online somewhere? I'd really like to read it.

You didn't say what kind of Vieja or what size tank, but I have found Viejas generally to be very aggressive, especially with newly introduced similarly shaped fish.
If your fish grew up together, they may be compatible, but anything new, may be doomed even if it's larger. I've had Vieja / Paratheraps types batter much larger and reputably more aggressive fish such as dovii into submission.

its a 225 gallon tank, and the Vieja is a 4"-5" syn or similar.
I have also experienced first hand this behaviour, I knew someone that had a frontosa get beaten up, he later put the same frontosa in the tank again and the exact same fish instantly hated it again. however the reintroduction was completely succesful, the fish just seemed to remember and hate eachother.

oscar is doing much better today, swimming around and looking much healthier. still not as active as an oscar should be, but hes doing good.

Glad the Oscar is doing better, and I'm sure he/she will heal quickly. Oscars seem to heal fast.
What do you think about the opposite? Adding an aggressive or more dominate cichld to a more submissive tank after the other cichlids have grown?

I agree with Aquamojo. once the fish get past about 6"-7" they take on a very aggressive stance to anything being introduced. I've noticed lately that my vieja has adopted what I assume is breeding dress. which might be why he beat up the oscar. he keeps persuing my female syn, so if theyre trying to breed that would explain how my oscar got beaten up. the vieja has an interesting breeding dress. he looks like a Zonata with some pink on his chest, its really awesome.

the oscar is doing a lot better every day, hes very sulky though when I go near him and turns his blind side to me... lol

Sorry I know double posting is frowned upon but would like to say that the oscar is now feeding happily on shrimp pellets. it looks like he has his full appetite back already which is really good news.
