Question about River Monsters

I was watching the Vundu Catfish episode of River Monsters. The local chief tested Jeremy Wade by showing him a partially covered container with some fish in it and Jeremy pulled one out. He said it looked like a snakehead (an example of convergent evolution) but was not a snakehead. Does anyone know what it was? Is it available? Is it legal to own in the US?

Everything I have read has them listed as a purely north american species.

no there are bowfin in africa. Very cool fish to keep in a tank if alone. Get around 2ft

I thought it was some species of lungfish? Don't remember it well though...

you can keep them in fish tanks but they get about 2 ft and get really nasty and are cool fish to have.
