Zoodiver said that the catalyst for stingray venom is protein based. Would it be possible to manufacture an anti-venom enzyme to counteract this action? Hopefully Matt will be along to spew forth his knowledge.

It is a protein based hemo-toxin. The first thing people recommend is to place the injured area in hot water. The hot water actually breaks down the chemical bonds in the proteins, breaking them up and relieving the pain.

I am sure that a "anti-venom" could be produced. However, the market for it would most likely be very small. To further complicate the situation, it may be that different types of rays have different types of venom.

The venom is not deadly, just very painful.

I thought there was a potential that it could kill you?

Yeah, I'm going to agree with Colin. Even if you could get an antivenom going, the market is so limited the funding wouldn't be there for production. Aside from that, the bacteria David mentioned is an aspect that must be delt with as well. The hot water flush gets a good jump on both issues.

One other fun thing to do is once you get tagged, cut the wound open to make sure there isn't any remaining barb fragments left in you.

Nic, there are cases of death. Usually, they are smaller kids who take large amounts of the toxin, or people who have jeopardized health to start with.

just dont get stung then their no need to worrie :D

I didn't really consider the financial aspect. Perhaps more demand could be created...:nilly:

Wade with the stingrays, only $5

so basically its just gonna be living hell if I ever get tagged by one of my rays...

The real concern is not the venom.....it is the bacterial infection that can follow.

Treatment in the ER does nothing for the venom. They will just make sure that the wound is thoroughly cleaned, rinsed and sewn.

Yep, trust me, you feel like you want your hand/foot/whatever part gets tagged to be cut off when it happens.

Ewurm, feel free to post my description of what it feels like if you want to. :D
