Please state in your answer if you own a texas or not thanks.

So I have to make a decision on keeping my GT and Severum or my Texas cichlid. The severum and texas are my two favorite fish both are fish I have wanted for a very long time. How ever my Texas has hit sexual maturity or something and beat up both my GT and Severum (both much bigger than the TX. I separated the texas out into a 20 long that I have (he is only about 4" right now) until I decide what to do.

I am having a hard time deciding. This is the hardest decision I have made in keeping my fish.

Severum - I think is beautiful and I like how it takes up the middle layer of the tank. I can also add more fish with him.

Texas (H. Carpi)- most beautiful fish ever IMO and I kind of like the tough guy attitude he has.

Anyways on to my question. I started my journey into new world cichlids with JD and salvini. I got sick of them after about a year cause all they did was hang out in there caves. If I get rid of GT and severum and just keep the texas is he going to be come a cave dweller to or do texas typically spend time out and about cruising the tank.

Before the attacks he was always cruising around and out and about but I don't know if that is cause he was keeping an eye on the other fish.

+1 but there are things you can do to make your Texas more interesting. Adding dithers can help to get fish comfortable & out of hiding, but you might have to replace them from time to time. You could also get a mate for your texas, depending on your tank size.

I kept a trimac as a solo wet pet & it was awesome seeing him grow from a fry to a beast, but there were alot of times I was bored with the tank.

Never owned a texas but I have had many "wet pets" and they are certainly different than communities, but depending on the area the tank is located I go both ways. If the tank is in a high traffic area like an entry way or living room I love how interactive a big mean solo fish is, always engaging anyone who passes, but if the tank is in a more "quiet" area I prefer communities. But ime solo fish become very personable when they dont have tankmates to terrorize

Tanks is a 75 gallon. It is in bedroom. The only time I have to watch it is before going to bed. So not a high traffic area. I do worry about becoming board with a single fish. If he isn't moving around then I will become bored quickly I have had that happen.

Everything is telling me to keep the sev especially since my kids named it (mr sprinkle cook :shakehead: ) and it is very passive. But the texas is so darn hot looking. Looks like a SW fish. This is when I first added him his blues pop even more now background is a nice yellow with a white belly.

That texas is gorgeous but the best part of a solo fish is its interaction with people. If it is just to look at I think ull get bored.

PS just spoke with the LFS they have a fish order coming in tomorrow (which I already knew cause I am an addict) so I have a week do decided before they can take it but they will take which ever I decide if they have the room.

sounds like your set on keeping the texas!-) im bias as i love mean fish, as its a pet you cant cuddle or throw a stick for my vote is for interaction. a nice texas is a sight, everyone has nice sevs and greenterrors are in all the lfs. carpi are special..

How are adult texas interaction with people? I know every fish varies but in general. This one is not so great he used to come to the glass and great me (waiting for food) but now he is skittish since I separated him.

Very true they are special really hard to find by me. I kind of am set on the texas but I am nervous about making this decision because I gave my self a goal of no more fish for 1 year. Actually that is an agreement I made with my wife since I mail ordered $130.00 worth of HRP's from Rapps. She wasn't thrilled.
